The Green Bean Pick

by | Jul 26, 2022 | Market News, CSA Member Updates, Dee's Corner

The green beans are ready!  Members are welcome to visit the green bean field from 9am to dusk now through Sunday, July 31st.  You will be picking a variety of green bean named Lewis, a crisp and juicy bush bean.  Harvesting the green beans is very similar to picking the peas earlier this season. Grasp the top of the bean (notice the little stem that connects the bean to the main vine), snap off the bean at the stem while trying to avoid pulling on the vine.  We ask that you bring your own containers and pick whatever amount your family can use.

There are several ways to preserve green beans including canning, freezing, dehydrating, and fermenting.  The University of Minnesota Extension website is a great resource.  Here are a couple of link to follow, Freezing Fresh Vegetables, Pickling Basics.  You can also find green bean freezing basics on our website here, freezing green beans.  Or, click here, and scroll to the bottom of the page for delicious green bean recipes.

Directions to the green bean field: (Station Trail, Rosemount):
From Pahl’s Market:  east on County Road 46 (160th Street) to Biscayne Avenue (first road after crossing over Highway 3 going east).  South on Biscayne to 170th Street.  East on 170th Street to Station Trail.  The field is on the north west corner of 170th and Station Trail.  Go north on Station Trail and park on the west side of the road. Field coordinates:  44.703702 -93.094427

Have fun!
