Mums the Word

by | Jun 1, 2016 | Market News

The craziness is coming to a close and soon our greenhouses will quickly start to empty! We still have plenty of hanging baskets, patio tubs, tropicals, and 4.5” transplant pots available!  If you haven’t done so already come on in and get your flowerbeds or perennial gardens planted.  Realized you have some extra space?  Good news!  Our hanging baskets are all buy one, get one FREE starting today, June 1st!

Also, be sure to grab your vegetable plants for an endless edible sensation all summer!  There is still an abundant selection of herbs and vegetables to choose from. For us, there is no time to rest between seasons and planning our next crop is just right around the corner.

June is the time to start thinking fall. Yes you read that correctly, we have to look that far out for our next garden plants! Starting about the third week in June we will be planting our chrysanthemum crop. Theses plants take quite a long time to fill out and some maintenance is required, such as pinching. This pinching promotes shoot development which basically prepares the plant to get as full as possible in time for fall. We plant roughly 14,000 mum pots of various shapes and sizes, adding some mixes in there as well.  Mums are short day plants, which means that they require short days and long nights in order for them to bloom. These long days and short nights help the canopy development of our mums.  This works out perfect because our goal come fall time is a nice full mum pot that is in beautiful bloom. Enjoy these last couple of weeks of spring and remember, Mums the Word!
