Keep Your Christmas Tree Fresh

by | Nov 20, 2023 | Market News, Caring for your Plants

There’s nothing quite like having a real Christmas tree for the Holidays, but a real tree requires real care to keep it fresh through Christmas!  Follow these tips to keep your tree healthy and glowing!

First, you should know that most Christmas trees should last 5+ weeks with proper care. This means waiting until after Thanksgiving is usually the best idea.

You’ll then want to make sure you pick a healthy tree to begin with. Shop at your local farm and follow best practices for picking your tree. We wrote up a guide for picking the perfect Christmas tree, so you can check that out here!

After Picking Your Tree

The tree stand should always be kept full of water. If the water level drops below the base of the tree, a seal will form over the cut stump. This will prevent the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled.  If a seal does form, you’ll need to make another fresh cut.

Keep a close eye on water levels, particularly when you first bring it home. Remember that a tree can absorb a gallon of water or more within the first 24 hours.  Thereafter it may take in one or more quarts a day.  In addition to keeping the tree fragrant, water is important because it prevents the needles from drying and dropping off and the boughs from drooping.

Also remember to keep your tree away from heat sources such as heat vents, radiators, fireplaces, or even televisions.  It is best not to put it in a sunny window or keep the drapes closed while the sun is at its strongest.

Take the time to test all your light cords and extension cords before using them.  Discard and replace any cords with cracked insulation or broken sockets.  Keeping your home and family safe during this merry season is top priority.

After Christmas, don’t wait too long before taking down your tree. Even though it might still look beautiful, taking it down before it dries out means less dead pine needles to clean up.
